- Description
This study seeks to measure and determine the changes in area and volume of a glacier located in the central region of Ecuador. Recent studies have shown that glacier coverage of the Antisana volcano has receded during the last 60 years. Consequently, this research sets out to integrate climate anomalies and glacier volume/ area changes in a Geographic Information System. Secondary data were obtained from the Military Geographic Institute of Ecuador (IGM) in order to illustrate in the form of maps the Antisana ice coverage retreat between 1965 and 2012 and climatic data from the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology of Ecuador (INAMHI). In addition, based on models of future climate undertaken by the IPCC, this research has analysed how the Antisana glacier coverage might change over the coming decades based on models of future climate undertaken by the IPCC, which would undoubtedly affect local populations via a decreased access to melt water.
